A new rate-minimizing matching criterion and a fast algorithm for block motion estimation

چکیده
We present a new block matching criterion for motion estimation in video coding that will give better encoded video quality than the commonly used sum of absolute differences (SAD) or even sum of squared differences (SSD) criteria. The new criterion tends to concentrate the discrete cosine transformed block energy into DC frequency which may allow coding the AC coefficients with less bits. The criterion gives best results on sequences which have varying lighting conditions. Furthermore, we modify the Successive Elimination Algorithm (SEA) and Multilevel Successive Elimination Algorithm (MSEA) to be usable with the new criterion by deriving a new tighter lower bound for the SSD criterion. The new bound can be used either directly with the SSD criterion or with the new bit-rate minimizing criterion.

Adaptive search area for fast motion estimation
In this paper a new method for determining the search area for motion estimation algorithm based on block matching is suggested. In the proposed method the search area is adaptively found for each block of a frame. This search area is similar to that of the full search (FS) algorithm but smaller for most blocks of a frame. Therefore, the proposed algorithm is analogous to FS in terms of reg...
متن کاملNew adaptive interpolation schemes for efficient meshbased motion estimation
Motion estimation and compensation is an essential part of existing video coding systems. The mesh-based motion estimation (MME) produces smoother motion field, better subjective quality (free from blocking artifacts), and higher peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) in many cases, especially at low bitrate video communications, compared to the conventional block matching algorithm (BMA). Howev...
متن کاملSubblock sum matching algorithm for block-based interframe coding
A fast block-matching algorithm for motion estimation is described for interframe image coding. Utilizing the fact that the motion is searched by a macroblock basis while the compression is performed by a block basis in many video compression standards, the proposed algorithm produces high PSNR and fast computation while keeping the bit-rate as low as those of conventional fast algorithms. The ...

In this paper we propose a new search strategy for fast block matching based on Four-Neighborhood Search (FNS) and fast com...
متن کاملVideo coding based on true motion estimation
In this paper, a new approach for MC-DCT (motion compensated – Discrete Cosine Transform) hybrid video coding based on true motion estimation is proposed. The true motion estimation technique employs the leastmedian-squares (LMedS) matching criterion in block matching process for motion estimation. The rationale for using such true motion estimator is that at low bit-rates, very few bits are av...
